HOW CAN YOU BELIEVE IN A GOD YOU CANNOT SEE?
  “How Can You Believe In . . . ?”

Scripture: Job 38:1-11

C.I. “…A God You Cannot See?

Today we begin a new series. – In it I will try to answer some questions raised by skeptics!
This series is being presented as a means to “Equip God’s family….” – Learn & Invite!

I. Does God Exist? Just Put Your C.O.A.T. on and You will See!

A. Introduction: Either God exists or He doesn’t! There is no middle ground.
1. If God does exist, then nothing else really matters.
a. If God exists then there is a heaven to be gained (Jn. 14:2-3) & a hell to be avoided (Rev. 20:15)
b. If God does not exist, then nothing matters at all!! - I Cor. 15:32, says it well, “Let us eat & drink, for tomorrow we die.”
c. Therefore, the question regarding the existence of God – is a most important question to ask!!!

2. Skeptics will often say, “But you can’t say, ‘The Bible says…’ in order to prove that God exists!”
a. Unbelievers reject arguments from the scripture saying, ‘God’s self-testimony is not credible.’
1) We know II Tim. 3:16-17 – Thus, God’s word can be enough for the open-minded.
2) But for those who require other proofs – God is not without His resources - I Pt. 3:15.

3. Legal authorities recognize the validity of a prima fascia case.
a. Such a case exists; “When adequate evidence is available to establish the presumption of a fact,
which, unless such can be refuted, legally stands as fact.”
b. Inferential proof: “The culmination of many lines of evidence into only 1 possible conclusion
is an invaluable part of a prima fascia case. – There is a vast amount of inferential evidence!
c. Thus, in this lesson we will use extra-biblical logic to demonstrate the existence of God. – Then
we will show that God Himself - supports this use of logic from His holy word.

B. “C” = Cosmological Argument

1. “Everything that has a beginning in time has a cause.”
a. Examples: 1929 Hubbel discovered the “Red-Shift” (universe is expanding) – from when?!!!
1) Spider Galaxies (why are they not wound up?),
2) Comets (why are they not used up?)
b. God’s word validates the “Cosmological Argument” for His existence;
1) (Gen. 1:1), “In the beginning GOD…” – Since God is eternal He is the uncaused 1st cause!
2) (Jn. 1:3), “All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into….”
3) (Heb. 3:4), “For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.”
4) So what is more reasonable; that “things” just created themselves, or that “God created the
heavens and the earth,”?

C. “O” = Ontological Argument

1. “All mankind has in all times had the concept of some kind of God.”
a. The mind of man cannot create, it can only combine, transpose, augment or diminish things already afforded to us. – (Ex,: Creatures from cantina scene in Star Wars, strange not different.)
1) Indeed, every culture has some concept of “God.” – This may have been perverted over time but is ultimately traceable to an original communication between Creator & creature (i.e., us)
2) When man creates “god” he looks a lot like us (cf. gods of Greece & Rome). – But when we look at the God of the Bible, He is far different than anything that man could conceive.
b. God’s word validates the “Ontological Argument” for His existence;
1) (Eccl. 3:11), “God has set eternity in our heart.” – A sense of the infinite within each of us!!
2) God’s plan for saving man could not have come from man - (I Cor. 2:9), “Things which eyes
has not seen, and ear has not heard, and which has not entered into the heart of man, all that
God has prepared for those who love Him.”
3) What is more reasonable; God created man or man’s imagination created the God of the Bible?

D. “A” = Anthropological Argument

1. “The innate quality within all mankind to believe there is a moral right and wrong.”
a. Only humans (not animals) seek to justify their own conduct.
1) People want the approval of their own conscience – as well as that of other human beings.
2) Whenever people are about “right/wrong” – they acknowledge a standard beyond themselves
3) The fact that we recognize what “ought” to be – requires that someone greater than mankind – originated a moral law and placed it in all of us!
b. God’s word validates the “Anthropological Argument” for His existence;
1) (Rom. 2:14-15), “When the Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of
the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law unto themselves, - in that they show the work
of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness, and their thoughts
alternately accusing or else defending them.”
2) So what is more reasonable; that a universal sense of right/wrong in man just happened, or
that a Creator placed this moral witness of Himself within all of us?!

E. “T” = Teleological Argument

1. “Since the universe exhibits intelligent design then there must have been an intelligent Designer.”
a. List scientific evidences from a Creator…
1) Examine arguments regarding design: eye – brain - trilobite, etc….!
2) It takes more faith to believe – this “all just happened” – than to believe in a Creator.
b. God’s word validates the “Teleological Argument” for God’s existence…
1) (Psa. 19:1), “The heavens declare the glory of God.”
2) (Psa. 139:14), “I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and my soul knows it very well.”
3) (Rom. 1:20), “Ever since the creation of the world God’s invisible attributes, His….”
c. So what is more reasonable; that the incredible order of the universe, in spite of its awesome
complexity “just happened,” or that an intelligent designer was behind the whole thing?!

CONCLUSION: List the “Arguments” & what we must believe if these are NOT valid!
1) We must beware of rejecting so much evidence, (Psa. 14:1), “The fool has said in his heart…
2) Logic can only bring us so far! - (Job. 11:7), “Can you search out the deep things of God?”
3) If we accept God’s existence – then we can know He has a plan for us, Rom. 1:16; Mk. 16:16.
