“And He shall be called…”
Scripture: Isaiah 9:6-7
C.I.: “Eternal Father”
During this series …. - Some believe, “Jehovah
is the name of the Father and Jesus is the name of God the Son.” – Today…
I. Jehovah, the Angel of the Lord and Jesus
A. The Witness of Moses
1. At the burning bush , ( Exodus 3:1-15 )
a. The “angel of the Lord” and “Jehovah”
1) V. 2 , it was, “…the angel of the Lord appeared to
him in a blazing fire in the midst of a bush . ”
2) Yet in vs. 4-6 , “When the Lord [Jehovah] saw
he turned aside … I am the God of your Father….”
3) Thus, the angel of the Lord is the God of the fathers (Abraham,
Isaac & Jacob).
b. Later in this passage the angel of the Lord ( v. 2 ) & Jehovah ( v.
4 ) gives His name
1) ( vs. 13-15 ), “Moses said to God, ‘Behold, now I am
going to the sons of Israel , and I shall say to them,
“The God of your fathers has sent me to you.” Now they shall say to me, “What
is His name?” What
shall I say to them?' – And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM; Thus you shall
say to the sons of
Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.' … ‘This is My memorial-name to all generations.'”
2) “I AM” = YHWH; unchanging, self-existent God. (The vowels
of adonai ) are added to make Jehovah.
3) ( Jn. 8:58-59 ), “Jesus said to them, ‘Truly,
truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am .' -
Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him.” – “I AM” = the name
of God, cf. Ex. 3:14 .
B. The Witness of Jacob
1. The dream at Bethel, ( Genesis 28 )
a. After stealing his brother's blessing and fleeing through Bethel, Jacob
had a dream.
1) ( vs. 12-13 ), “Behold, a ladder was set on the earth
with its top reaching to heaven; and angels of God
were ascending and descending on it. – And behold, the Lord stood above it
and said, ‘I am the Lord, the
God (Jehovah) of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.'”
2) ( vs. 18-20 ), “Jacob arose early, took the stone
he had under his head and set it up as a pillar, and poured
oil on its top. – And he called the place Bethel … and made a vow.”
3) Later in the same context we read, ( Gen. 31:11-13 ), “Then
the angel of God said to me in a dream and
He said, ‘I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, and where you
made a vow to Me.'”
4) ( Jn. 1:51 ), “Truly, truly, I say to you, you
shall see the angels of God a. & d. the Son of Man.”
C. The Witness of Isaiah
1. The Vision of Isaiah, ( Isaiah 6 )
a. ( vs. 1-5, 10 ), “In the year of king Uzziah's
death, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne … And My eyes have seen the
King, the Lord (Jehovah) of hosts . … And He said, ‘Render
the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, &
their eyes dim, lest they see with their eyes & hear with their ears, -
understand with their hearts & return & I
should heal them.”
1) John later writes about Jesus and the people of His day in Jn.
12:39-42 ), saying, “…Isaiah said again,
‘He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts; lest they see with their
eyes, and perceive with their
heart, and be converted and I should heal them.' – These things Isaiah said
because He saw His glory
and he spoke of Him … Many of the rulers believed in Him.”
2) Thus, the Jehovah of Isaiah 6:5 is Jesus of John
12:41.
2. The Prophecy of Isaiah, ( Isaiah 40 )
a. ( Isa. 40:3 ), “A voice is calling, ‘Clear the
way for the Lord (Jehovah) in the wilderness; make smooth in
the desert
a way for our God.'”
1) In Matthew 3:3 , John the Baptist cried out and
said, “This is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet,
saying, ‘The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the
Lord, make His paths stra.”
2) Thus, John the Baptist fulfilled Isaiah's prophecy – by preparing
the way for Jehovah, i.e. JESUS!!!
B. The Witness of Jesus
1. Jesus unity with God the Father
a. This unity was understood by His enemies:
1) ( Jn. 5:17-18 ), “He was saying to them, ‘My Father
is working until now and I Myself and working.' –
For this cause the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him … but also was
calling God His own
Father, making Himself equal to God.”
2) ( Jn. 10:30-31 ), “‘I and the Father are one.'
The Jews took up stones again to stone Him.”
b. Told to the multitude & His disciples:
1) ( Jn. 8:24 ), “…you shall die in your sins; for unless
you believe that I AM, you shall die in your sins.”
2) ( Jn. 14:8-9 ), “Philip said to Him, ‘Lord, show
us the Father, and it is enough for us.' – Jesus said to him,
‘Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? – He
who has seen Me has
seen the Father; how do you say, ‘Show us the Father?'”
3) ( Acts 1:8 ), “You shall be My witnesses both
in Jerusalem, and in all Judea & Samaria….”
a) Fulfillment of prophecy - ( Isa. 43:10 ), “‘You
are My witnesses,' declares Jehovah …
understand that I am He. – Before Me there was no G od formed & there will
be none after Me”
b) Our friends the Jehovah's Witnesses – get their “name” from this verse. – They
make a big deal
out of the use of capital letters re: God.
c) ( Deut. 32:9 ), “See now that I, I am He, and there
is no g od besides Me.” = little “g”
d) Thus, the “Jehovah” we are witnesses of in Isa. 43:10 is
our “Jesus” in Acts 1:8 !!!
3. At this point some might ask, “So which is it; is there one God, or
two, or three?”
a. The “trinity” is truly one of the most difficult concepts in the Bible
to understand (and sadly, many blow it!).
1) Yet nature teaches us it is possible to have 3 things that are the same – but
are not alike (e.g. H 2 O).
b. Indeed, the scriptures strive very early on to demonstrate– that it
is possible to have 2 = 1
1) (Deut. 6:4; Mk. 12:29 ), “Hear O Israel, the Lord [Jehovah] is
our God, the Lord [Jehovah] is one!”
1) ( Gen. 1:26 ), “Then God [singular] said, ‘Let
Us [plural] create man in Our [plural] own image….”
2) The same thing is possible amongst people, too, ( Gen. 2:24 ), “For
this cause a man [+1] shall leave his
father and his mother, and shall cleave to his wife [+1]; and they [1+1] shall
become ONE.”
3) The same thing is possible for more than just two, ( Jn. 17:20-21 ), “I
do not ask on behalf of these
[apostles] alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their
word; - that they may all be one ; even
as You Father, are in Me and I in You, that they may also be in Us, that the
world….”
CONCLUSIONS:
1. Christians do not serve a “junior-varsity” God – for Jesus is the
Jehovah of the Bible; truly GOD ALMIGHTY!
2. As Jehovah, He has the power to save us from our sins no matter
how bad or awful they are!
3. So, going forth as witnesses is a command from Jesus. For He says,
( quote Matt. 28:18-20 ).
