“And He shall be called…”
Scripture: Isaiah 9:6-7
C.I.: “Mighty God”
Last week we began a new series of lessons…. . Today
we will begin looking at the second title of Jesus, “Mighty God.”
I. What this Title Means to Him & What It Means to Me, (Hebrews
1)
A. Jesus is God ( Some say Jesus was, “a good man,” “a
prophet,” “or “God's 1st creation.” What does God say?)
1. Claims for His Deity, ( Hebrews 1:1-3 )
a. His Relationship: “…whom He appointed heir of all things,” ( 2b )
1) Jesus is “Lord” because of His relationship to us – but He is heir because
of rel., to the Father.
b. His Authority: “…through whom also He made the
world,” ( 2c )
1) The creation of the world – could only be through the work of God ( Gen.
1:1; Col. 1:16 ),
“For by Him all things were created, in the heavens and on earth, visible & invisible.”
c. His Attributes: “He is the radiance of His glory,” ( 3a )
1) All the qualities of God that make Him glorious (holy, omniscient…), are
found in Jesus.
2) ( Col. 2:9 ), “For in Him all the fullness of deity
dwells in bodily form.”
d. His Nature: “…the exact representation
of His nature,” ( 3b )
1) Refers to the impression left by a tool impressing a coin – or a signet
ring in wax.
2) Do you want to know what God is like? Look at Jesus… (examples from His
life)! 3) ( Col. 1:15 ), “He is the image of
the invisible God.”
e. His Power: “…and upholds all things
by the word of His power,” ( 3c )
1) Some people say the world is falling apart. – Imagine what it would be like without Jesus?!
2) He is the “strong force” – that holds the atoms together.
3) ( II Pt. 3:10 ), “The day of the Lord will come like
a thief, in which the heavens will pass….”
f. His Sacrifice: “When He had made
purification for sins,” ( 3d )
1) O.T. sacrifices were the object of the sacrifice – but they themselves did
not forgive, ( 10:4 ).
2) Only God can remove sins - ( Mk. 2:7-12 ), “‘Who can
forgive sins but God alone?'…!”
g. His Position: “…He sat down at the right hand of majesty
on high,” ( 3e )
1) The Jewish priests never were allowed to sit – the work of sacrifice was
never finished.
2) ( Heb. 10:12 ), “But He, having offered 1 sacrifice
for sins for all time, sat down at the right
hand of God.”
2. Proofs of His Deity, ( Hebrews 1:4-14 )
a. He is called “Son” by God the Father, ( 5 )
1) “…for to which of the angels did He ever say, ‘You are My Son , today
I have begotten You'?”
2) Son” = of the same nature (cf. “Son of Man” and “Son
of God” )
3) Thus, He is “Mighty God” – because He is of the same nature
as the Father.
b. He is worshipped by angels, ( 6 )
1) “ [The Father] says, ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him.'”
2) Angels know who deserves worship – ( Rev. 22:9 ), “…worship
God!”
3) Thus, He is “Mighty God” because He is worthy of the worship of
angels.
c. He is called “God” by the Father, ( 8-10 )
1) “But of the Son He says, ‘Your throne, O God , is forever and ever,
and the righteous scepter is
the scepter of His kingdom. – You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
therefore
God [Jesus], Your God [Father], has anointed You with the
oil of gladness….”
2) Thus, He is “Mighty God” because the Father calls Him God.
d. He is eternal, ( 12 )
1) “You are the same, and Your years will not come to an end.”
2) We are immortal (that part of us created in the image of God will never
cease to exist…
heaven or hell). – But Jesus has always existed (cf. Jn. 1:1 ). – Since
He is eternal He is God.
B. “Okay, so Jesus is worthy of the title, ‘Mighty God.' What
good is that to me?!”
1. This is not a new question
a. ( Mk. 1:40 ), “And a leper came to Him, beseeching
Him and falling on his knees before Him, and
saying to Him, ‘If you are willing, You can make me clean.'”
1) Notice that the leper's concern was not about what Jesus could do – but
what He would do!!!
2) In other words, what good is a “mighty God,” – if that might is
not used to help us???!
2. Our “Mighty God” provides us with all that we truly need...
a. ( Eph. 1:19 ), “ … what is the surpassing
greatness of His power towards us who believe.”
b. Yet what we need to understand – is that Jesus uses His power
to help us in the greater areas of need:
1) When we ask for “position” – ( Eph. 2:6 ), “He has
raised us up and has seated us w/Him..”
2) When we asked for “wealth” – ( Eph. 2:7 ), “…in
order that in ages to come He might show
the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus.”
3) When we asked for “health” – ( I Pt. 2:24 ), “He
Himself bore our sins in His body on the
cross … for by His wounds you were healed.”
4) When we asked for long life – ( Jn. 11:26 ), “Everyone
who lives & believes in Me shall never..
5) When we asked for greatness – ( Mk. 16:15-16 ), “Go
into all the world…!”
