“God's Song”
Scripture: II Samuel 11:1-5; 12:1-9
C.I.: “The Song of the Forgiven”
Last Sunday we saw that God would not bless the sinner
( quote Psa. 1:1 ).
But what of those who do sin? – What of them?! - Today we will hear the song
of the forgiven!!!
I. 4 Verses: One Great God , (Psalm 32)
A. INTRO: The Conclusion at the Beginning,” (vs. 1-2)
1. “How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered. – How blessed is the
man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit there is
no deceit.”
a. David had been guilty of a number of things…
1) Transgression = Treachery against God
2) Sin = Failure to hit the mark.
3) Iniquity = A distortion of the heart.
4) Deceit = Willful Deception.
b. This song tells the story of how it is possible – for God to bless a man
guilty of these things...
B. The Silence of Conviction, (vs. 3-4 )
1. “When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away through my groaning
all day long. – For
day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; - my vitality was drained away as
with the fever
heat of the summer.”
a. Sin takes its toll on people. – All sins are damaging spiritually,
( cf. Rom. 6:23 ), “The wages...
1) Sin damages people physically – e.g., fornication/HIV, STDs, - “…receiving
in their
persons the due penalty for their error,” ( Rom. 1:27 ),
2) Sin damages people emotionally – ( 51:12 ), “Restore
to me the joy of Thy salvation.”
b. Even God's heavy hand of conviction is for repentance – lest we are
hardened, ( I Tim. 4:2 ).
1) So why do people remain silent – when help is just a confession away?!
2) Look around! ILLUST.: How many of us have never sinned?! – How
many deserve
aren't struggling now? Who deserves a “holier-than-thou” attitude?! – ( Heb.
3:13 )!
3) ( Jms. 5:14-16 ), “Is any among you sick/weak? – Let
him call for the elders of the
church…. – the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick/weak,
and the
Lord will raise him up, and if he has committed any sins, they will be forgiven
him…”
C. The Sound of Confession, (v. 5)
1. “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not
hide, I said, ‘I will confess my
transgressions to the Lord', and You forgave the guilt of my sin.”
a. Compare v. 1 with v. 5 . – All
that David did – HE DID NOT WITHHOLD FROM GOD!!!
1) David gave no “general confession” (I have sinned) – he
withheld nothing!
2) “The less we spare ourselves, the more God will spare us!!!”
b. The confession which arises from a broken heart – will always be heard
by God!!!
1) ( Psa. 51:16-17 ), “You do not delight in sacrifice,
otherwise I would give it … the
sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart, O God,
You….”
2) Our confession is motivated by the cross – ( Rom. 3:23-25 ), “For
all have sinned…
being justified fully as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is
Christ… -
whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood.”
3) Our response to the cross – is to acknowledge our faith-LESS-ness,
before His faith-
FULL-ness - ( I Jn. 1:9 ), “But if we confess our sins,
He is faithful & just to….”
4) God's eagerness to forgive our sin – should prompt us to come to Him!!!
D. The Song of Cleansing, (vs. 6-7 )
1. “Therefore let everyone who is godly pray to You in a time when You
may be found; surely in a
great flood of waters they shall not reach him.”
a. “Godly” are NOT the sinless – but those who have learned to
bring their sins to God!
1) It used to be when David looked around - all he could see was his own sinfulness –
“For I know my transgression, my sin is ever before me,” ( 51:3 ).
2) His embarrassment/guilt over sin is described as “a flood of great
waters” – but once
we learn to bring our sins to God – these things can no longer reach/hurt us!
b. Now the sound of David's “sighing” - has been replaced by the sounds of
his “singing”!!!
1) “ You are my hiding place; You preserve me from trouble; - You surround
me
with songs of deliverance,” ( v. 7 ).
2) For what David has now learned – is instead of hiding from God – is
to hide in God.
– For that is how we stay out of trouble & save ourselves from the pain
of guilt.
E. The Shout of Confidence, (vs. 8-11 ) – David, having
learned this, now seeks to instruct others (us!).
1. “I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you should go; -
I will counsel you with my
eye upon you. – Do not be as the horse or the mule which have no understanding,
whose trapping
include bit and brindle to keep them in check.”
a. Horses run impetuously ahead – mules lag woefully
behind. - But the one who would be
blessed – follows God wherever He leads, ( cf. Psa. 23:3 ), “He
leads me in the paths….”
b. “Many are the sorrows of the wicked ” - People w/o God ( wicked )
in their lives – will
experience much sorrow.
1) “…but he who trusts in the Lord, loving-kindness shall surround
him. – Be glad in
the Lord and rejoice you righteous ones, and shout for joy all you who are
upright..”
2) But God protects us & sets us free - “For the law of the Spirit
of life in Christ Jesus
has set us free from the law of sin and death,” ( Rom. 8:2 ).
2) So we now sing, v. 1 , and also tell others the good news
of Jesus, Mk. 16:15-16!!!
